Todd Szada didn’t set out to start an environmental abatement company. While running a fire and water restoration business, he constantly found himself relying on outside vendors for asbestos and lead abatement. The delays and lack of reliability weren’t just frustrating—they were costly. One misstep even led to a state fine for unknowingly removing asbestos-containing material. Rather than let that setback define the business, Todd and his team got certified themselves. Umbrella Environmental was born from that challenge, allowing them to take control, move faster, and deliver better results.
"We have to set ourselves apart by being an employer that treats our employees with dignity and respect and we understand that family comes first."
Finding the Right People
Running a business like Umbrella Environmental means finding employees who are not only hardworking but also willing to suit up—literally. Staff often wear full-body protective suits, respirators, and gloves. For many, that’s unfamiliar or even intimidating. Todd’s biggest challenge isn’t the technical side of the work. It’s finding people who show up reliably, are willing to work hard, and can adapt to the demands of the job. As a smaller company, they cannot offer the same perks as a massive corporation, but what they can offer is meaningful. “We give you that work-life balance and the respect you deserve,” Todd says. “Time off to attend family things is important. Not working weekends and holidays is important.”
Always Showing Up for the Community
Community isn’t just a box Todd checks off. It’s the foundation of everything Umbrella Environmental stands for. Whether it’s disinfecting emergency vehicles during the pandemic or organizing annual bean bag tournaments for causes like H.A.W.S., Susan G. Komen, and the Fallen Firefighters Foundation, Todd leads with service. That dedication has earned his company recognition, including Business of the Year from the Delafield Chamber of Commerce. The Szadas show up to local events, church every week, and volunteer where they can. “Being a part of our community is very important,” Todd says. “We try to attend as many events as possible that may impact our family and friends and our business.”

Values You Can Feel
Todd leads with two values that guide every decision: honesty and hard work. He’s clear with his team and his son—tell the truth, even if it’s tough. “The truth will always come out,” he says. “I’d rather you tell me up front and let me be mad for a short time than lose trust long-term.” He expects full effort from everyone on his team and makes sure they know their work matters. That kind of leadership builds a culture that’s rare and real. Customers trust them because Todd’s team takes time to educate, follow regulations, and never cut corners. “That moment when someone tells us they had no idea where to start, and then they thank us for walking them through it all—that’s what makes me feel great.”
Focused Growth with Purpose
Todd and his wife, co-owners of the business, run Umbrella Environmental with a strategy rooted in steady growth and thoughtful investment. “We are not cheap but rather we spend money wisely,” Todd says. Their goal is to grow 15 percent every year, and recent online marketing efforts are already showing promise. But Todd knows that the path forward depends on finding the right people. “We need more happy employees willing to work,” he says. The momentum is real, but Todd stays grounded. For him, running a business is like having another member of the family—it takes energy, care, and consistent attention.
Todd Szada’s story is what the Local Legend spotlight is all about. He turned a frustrating gap in the industry into a thriving, respected business. He leads with heart, honesty, and humility—showing up for his team, his customers, and his community every step of the way. Umbrella Environmental may be a smaller company, but with the way they care for people and lead with values, they’re setting a big example. Todd reminds us that owning a business isn’t about shortcuts or comfort—it’s about building something that lasts and being proud of how you do it.
